VISUAL LEARNER

You have a passion for art and daydreaming and do best with instructions that include graphics such as charts, pictures and diagrams. You rely mainly on what you see to take in information because you often don’t remember what was heard for very long (ex. written instructions and turning in written
reports). You remember faces more readily than names.

HACKS

  • Take notes while listening to verbal instruction and leave space for adding missed details later.
  • Rewrite notes as a way to study.
  • Look at the person talking to stay focused.
  • Use highlighters for color-coding information.
  • Underline and highlight in different colors.
  • Create charts or graphics of key points for studying.
  • Use flash cards - Writing and viewing create a brain and muscle function link for better remembering.
  • Keep notes and study guides neat and organized to better remember the content.
  • Skim through all the pictures and graphs in a chapter before reading it.
  • Create a quick word or picture outline before answering an essay question.
  • Use note pads, sticky notes and to-do lists for visual reminders.
  • Allow plenty of time for problem-solving tasks.
  • Actively participate in group activities in class.

CAUTIONS

Visual learners are often very verbal, but think mostly in pictures and can be easily distracted. Study in an area that is quite (free of both sound and visual distraction). And sit towards the front of the class away from window, charts, bulletin boards and maps that can cause visual distractions.

IMPORTANT! This is not a bucket system. Each section shares many of the characteristics of and suggestions for that learning styles. EACH LEARNER IS UNIQUE AND MAY IDENTIFY WITH MORE THAN JUST ONE TYPE OF  EARNING STYLE, AND/OR FIND HABITS HELPFUL IN MORE THAN ONE STYLE. This means that you may see ideas that sound like you within more than just one style, and combining the hacks of each style you identify with can help with staying organized and learning in a way that is perfectly unique to you!
